1996 F150 V8 4x4 Tranmission not engaging

Just started out of the blue. Dont drive the truck much, dump runs etc, but did just have the rear-end replaced with diff, and 3 months later, when I shift into drive from park, the transmission doesnt engage unless I give it gas. Same thing in reverse and every other gear. I checked the fluid levels, looked low, added about helf a quart, didnt seem to help. Worried to drive it to a mechanic...

to my knowledge

its never been serviced...perhaps a flush and filter/fluid change would do the trick?

update

just went out and tried to move it, and its not engaging at all. I do smell that burnt smell, which I know isnt a good sign. It sounds like there is no fluid in the case. My main question now is what are the chances if I have it towed and the system flushed and filter/fluid changed that it will be ok, or once that burnt smell happens is all lost. Am I looking at a rebuilt tranny?
what are the odds?

If you are going to get it towed, tow it to a reputable tranny shop and see what they think.

im having the exact same problem, but my fluid is full.i have 1992 f150 with a 302 in it. i think it has a c4 but i dont know. i was doing some research on this and i read that if the tranny has over 80,000 miles on it and is never serviced than a fluid, and filter change can actually make it run worse than before. i guess the old oil with shaving in it helps grab. versus new oil has nothing. i dont know. i was thinking mabey a tourqe converter is slipping. i dont know anything about trannys. im doing research on this because i want to find out if im going to rebuild my tranny. any info on this would be great.

That's not going to be a C4. It's either going to be an AOD (door code T) (display PRN(D)D1) or a E4OD (door code E) (display PRN(D)21 with OD button on the ****). Both are 4 speed trannys, the AOD is mechanical and the E4OD is electronic.

The E4OD is a strong tranny, behind a 302 you don't need to get it beefed. The AOD is a light duty.

added half a quart of fluid and noticed it leaking right out the bottom....hoping maybe its just a gasket issue as this puppy was shifting just fine in the warmer weather and its a recent thing. I just dont know enough about tranmissions to know if once it has run without fluid, is it shot or will reppairing a gasket and refilling restore its normal operation. I really cant afford to pump much more $$ into this baby...

ddubuk your tranny only slips because it low on oil? i was thinking its the tourqe converter? i dont know anything about trannys so its a guessing game for me. im hoping that i can fix my trans slipping with a simple rebuild kit. im not sure witch one to go with though.ive seen $60.00 on up to $240.00..what do u guys think i should get. oh and do i need any specialty tools to do a rebuild?

I noticed the leaking closer to the front of the engine than the rear, after talking to a friend, Im thinking maybe the lines to and from the radiator are rusted and leaking. Im gonna go get a pipe cutter and some fuel line and a couple clamps and see if I can find a leak in one of those lines.....I hoping and praying....

We can't see pics that are on your hard drive. You have to upload them to a photo hosting site or an album here.
