Notchy 5 Speed Manual

I've noticed over the past few months that 1st to 2nd has gotten a little notchy when shifting. It feels as if the synchos are starting to wear or mess up.

IF I shift above 1800 rpms, it is rather smooth... anything below it is rather notchy.

Is there any way to fix this? Or do I need to tear apart the tranny?

Mind you... I've never, ever, ever, ever, grinded a gear with this truck. I know this for a 100% fact.

Is there where I say I love my auto?

But no seriously, how many miles are on the tranny?

Eh... notchy or not, I love my stick...

I got 31k on it.

It's not terribly annoying... but I'm just concerned.

It doesn't do it all the time, but more so when cold.

No... I haven't pulled a 6k trailer with this truck. That was with my '99.

It's just started doing over time. I don't think it's much to worry about, as I'm probably being over-**** about something that is normal. (As usual)

Check the slave for leaks. Bleed the slave. Change the tranny fluid. Do not rest your hand on the shift lever like I do.....

The way I understand it, Ford/Mazda changed at least the 2nd gear synchro assembly around 2002. They switched to a (dual cone?) setup that uses some kind of friction material between two of the rings in that synchro. While that friction material lasts, 2nd gear shifts are much better quality than with the old style synchro. Once the material is worn away, the shift quality is worse than the old style.

When I bought my truck used, I had never driven an M5OD that had such a silky smooth shift feel when up or down shifting to 2nd. I bought the truck with about 37k on it so I decided to change the trans fluid since it was black anyway. It felt like I had drained out my 2nd gear synchro with the old fluid. I couldn't believe how bad 2nd gear shifts felt. My theory is that the material from the 2nd gear synchro was basically suspended in the original fluid and as long as that was in there the shifts were fine. With that material gone after the fluid change, the shifts went to crap.

I have almost 60k on the truck now and I've tried a couple of different fluids in the trans with no real change. But it doesn't seem to get worse so I'm not really worried about it. I knew what I was getting myself into with this transmission when I bought the truck, otherwise I would probably be disappointed with it. I just plan to have the trans freshened up whenever it has to come out for a clutch or slave.

So in my opinion, you're probably just noticing some normal wear in the tranmission. As long as the slave isn't dragging, there probably isn't much you can do about it short of a tranny rebuild.

You sure you've never ground a gear with this trans? You must drive like more of a granny that I do.

Its funny how it reacts... only certain RPMs it can be slightly notchy... other times (which is most of the time) it is completely smooth as silk.

And nope, I've never, ever ground a gear driving it. I don't drive it like most people stole their cars. I need my truck to last.
