I pretty well always down shift the OD button for engine braking. I rarely down shift into 2nd unless I'm pulling a trailer or have to stop quick. If I have to stop quickly, I manually down shift and brake at the same time.

When I see that I need to stop, I gently push the OD button on the end of the stalk, When that shift has engaged, I then pull the shift lever down to 2nd gear. I rarely need to downshift to 1rst gear, but occasionally do.

When I have a green light, then I move the shift lever back to Drive and push the OD button again.

Will this cause any damage to my tranny? I ahve 170K on it, with fresh fluid and filter and it shifts wonderfully right now.

what's the point of an automatic if you want a manual???????????? if you want to do that get a manual valve body

I do it to keep that exhaust nice and gurgley!! And to save the brakes I guess. I do know that of you downshift at too high a speed, my truck just breaks traction. Probably not good for it.

I DO want a manual, but Ford won't give me one!!!!

And I really have an aversion to putting any $$$ toward my truck in the way of mods, when I have seven kids to take care of.

I could see downshifting when loaded down to help with braking, but not really sure why someone would do this every time they come to a stop light. Just use the brakes. The transmission will downshift when it needs to. All the money you're saving in brakes (which are CHEAP by the way over the course of 30-40k miles service life) you're just wasting in extra gas every time you downshift.

A BIG NEGITORY on that. My Edge shows max fuel economy even when the engine rpm's are around 3K when downshifting. This is just like idling at a light I presume because the injectors are NOT putting any more fuel into the engine unless the gas pedal is pressed.

Correct - with your foot off the gas, regardless of what gear you are in, the computer essentially has the fuel turned off.

well that may be the case, but when i downshift my truck i always see a mpg or two less than when i just let it coast to a stop in gear. at any rate, i still don't see the point in downshifting an automatic. it just sounds stupid to me.
