4r70w

i have a 99 f150 with 5.4 and i was driving around today just cruising along and after about 10 miles in this hot texas heat, my trans felt like 1st gear was pulling good, then 2nd gear was ok but felt a lil boggy, then i looked at my tach and noticed that when i applied fuel in 2nd my tach would seem to fluctuate 400 to almost 500 rpms before feeling it pull itself.. i have stock tranny cooler if there is one. i immediately pulled her over at the next closest autozone, i checked the fluid and she was good.. i smelled it and it didnt smell burnt or anything, i bought a small bottle of lucas tranny slip stop and added it, i was worried about over filling the trans but at only 24 oz of lucas i figured it wasnt full to the limit so it wouldnt hurt my pump.. the truck has been good to me and so far the only mods it has is cai, 6inches of lift, and 33 inch super swamper tsl ltb's. anybody have any suggestions at all??? oh yeah i got those crappy like 3.55 ring and pinion and no LS also

how many miles on the trans?

do you have factory tow package?

When (mileage) was your last trans service: drain, new filter and refill?

No, for starters you'd need new
  • PCM
  • shorten and lengthen driveshafts
  • new crossmember

You are much better off with just getting a built 4R70w.

I try and be gentle on my transmission in these brutally hot days, especially while in traffic.

yeah its a real pita can i install an extra cooler i see people doing that mod are they installing bigger coolers in place of old one or keeping both? what kinda 4r70w rebuild would u recommend? i want something that has really really firm shifts, like 2nd gear bark of the tires, but really really dependable. i like the fact the monster tranny operates like a normal auto on gear changes and cycles thru normally when in drive but when u drop it into 1st it operates like a manual and u can hand shift it..

Just need to Jmod the orifice plate. Most shops will put an upgraded orifice plate in with the rebuild.

you can see fast/firm the shifts here

Ive always bypassed factory cooler, but you can run both if you'd like to

don't jmod your truck, the jmod is for car valve bodies not truck valve bodies.

The "jmod" is a touchy subject on trucks. It will not work on that 99.
