I have a 1998 supercab 4x4, tranny shifts hard going into 3rd and o.d., once you get through the gears when it gets in a little bind it shutters and acts crazy. It don't have the power it's supposed to, took it to the shop and they said total rebuild of course, i know it probally does but come on $2600 to install a $300 kit. Any help would be appreciated.

 

I had a similar issue with mine. It started with 3rd and OD. It then stopped shifting into OD on the highway. Got off the highway asap. 1st was slipping horrendously. I limped it home and left it til the next day so the tranny shop could have it first thing Monday morning. Essentially, I grenaded it. They replaced my solenoids, planetarys. Almost everything inside it. In retrospect, it was probably the best $1800 repair I've spent. I don't know if thats the case with yours, and hopefully, you have more time. This all happened to mine within a 40 mile trip down the highway! All seemed fine with it until coming home on a Sunday night.

I looked in to the option of rebuilding it myself, and I did find on the net an in-depth article of doing it. BUT - I didn't have any of the specialty tools, and more importantly, for me anyways, I didn't have the luxury of time to screw around with it.
