Convert E4OD from 4x2 to 4x4
Convert E4OD from 4x2 to 4x4
Hey Guys,
I have a 98 5.4l 4x4 Supercab. The transmission needs a rebuild and I received a quote of $1700 from the local trans. shop. I found a 4x2 w/ 500 miles on it for $500 on CL w/ a converter.
My question is, what is involved with swapping the tail housing and output shaft on the broken 4x4 E4OD to the new 4x2 E4OD? The transmissions both appear to be the same.
Is it worth the conversion? I am not converting my truck to 4x2. It's already 4x4.
Thanks,
-Alex

No ,it's not worth it.
It sounds like a great idea and a way to save some money but it will not work out that way.
Problem is, in order to covert the trans you would have to totally disassemble both tranys.
The output shaft is the first thing to go in and the last thing to come out when building one .

See what the shop wants to swap it over. I guess around 600 bucks but then you end up with no warranty. It sounds expensive but $1700 for one of those transmissions done right is a great deal. I spent more than that in parts in the last one I built.
