Difference between 97-98 and 99-03 M5R2?

Hey guys,
I was just wondering if anyone here knows what the difference between the 97-98 M5R2 (aka M5OD-R2) and the one sold in 99-03? They both came behind the 4.2 but according to the parts interchange websites they aren't the same.
Thanks...

I just found this online: http://www.mackstrans.com/MazdaFordM5R24x4.html

Which seems to suggest the syncros might be a little different? However I'm wondering if when they are listed as not the same if there are definitely external differences too?

I think I've seen this here before - if I remember correctly, either the cases are different lengths or the tower for the shift lever is in a different location.

They moved the shift tower back 55mm. Here is a pic showing the two different shift towers.

Hmmmm so which one would fit better in my 02 fx4? I have a center console, so it might get in the way with the further back one? Input on this guys?

If you have a V-8, you can't use one from a V-6 or pre-Triton V-8 or I-6, different bellhousing patterns. The only one that will work is one off a 97-03 4.6. If you are putting it behind a 5.4, keep in mind that it's a bit weak.
