4x4 issues

I own a 2005 F150 with 4-wheel drive. Recently I have been experiencing a sort of metalic binding noise primarily when at highway speeds. When I apply the brakes to stop the noise changes to a groan which directly coincides with vehicle speed and ends with a bang originating from the front of the truck.

Shop diagnosed the problem as the front left hub and 4x4 actuator. Upon removal, the gears in both were all chewed up and there were substantial metal shavings in the assembly. Replaced both.

This morning I jumped on the highway and experienced the exact same noises - only difference is that the bang when I stop was more subtle.

Anyone elsedeal with this issue and can offer some advice as to the problem? The worn hub and actuator seem to be the result.

I have a 2007 4x4 super crew. I recently had the same problem. My ride was still under warranty. I took into the ford house and they told me it was the vacuum lines. They ended up replacing the switch vacuum lines and both hubs. I had the same exact problem in my 05. It is a ford thing. I still drive it and will never change my mind.
