4r70w 1997 f150 4x4 major fluid leak issue

ok is there some common issue with bad trans fluid leaking from the older 4r70w trannies ?? we have a 97 f150 4x4 and its getting progressively worse over a quart a few days and we cannot find where from we have tried and tried to lok closely all around the trans and cannot see a thing nor any way to lower the trans down to see the top of it. ive searchd all over the internet for a year now and still cant find anything. its bene leaking longer than this and trans fluid is expensive more and more now!!

any ideas ??

weve already got tons of work ahead of us on this damn truck, we need to replace all th ball joints, control arm bushings, rotors, and some other parts and exhaust manifolds are rotted with broken studs, and so on. these trucks are full of issues wow..

we are pulling it into the shop now to tear the truck down literally. 157k miles all original and totally stock untouched.

thanks!

My trans oil started to disappear and I couldnt find the leak. After a while looking on here i found out that the seal leaks bettween your transfer case and transmission. My transfer case was about half a gallon overfull. Check your transfer case when it is cold and see if it is overfull. It cost me about 170.00 to get it fixed if that is what it is. Hope this helps

hi there yes after we removed the trans case mount crossmember today and pulled the pan off the tranny we now see that it is coming from the gasket between the trans tail and the case adapter wow...

what bad deal...

why is this gasket leaking ?

poor design gasket or what ?

how do you check the levle in thse transfer cases btw ?
and what mode is it with 4r70W and 4.6L 1997?

the dealer here was unable to look up this gasket and instead gave me the big round shaped one at the front of the transfer case

idiots..

totally useless dealership we have here..

lousy!

where are the bolts hidden for the adapter to the tranny tail end anyways ?

we only see about three of them in the lower part of the adapter ?

small 10mm head ones

there are holes in the upper part that should be bolts but there are none

are they inside the adpater or something ??

thanks

well to change that seal you will more than likely have to pull back the Transfer case ad it's probably a tripple lip seal to check the level you will see a torx plug on the front side " i think" any way there are 2 one near the bottem and one about 6'' above it, just unscrew the top one and stick your finger in there and down a bit, you shoud have some fluid on your finger.. if the fluid just pours out of the filler hole you probably have a bad trany to t-case seal.

On my 02 the transfer case has two plugs, a drain plug and a fill plug on the back side. They both can be removed with a 3/8" ratchet.

I changed mine recently and it was overfilled a little. Now I'm beginning to worry.
