transmission filter/fluid

Ok this is on my 97 F150 XLT 4x4 automatic with the 4.6. Truck has 115k on it.

I looked up the transmission filter online at autozone. It lists 3 different ones. I know one was a different tranny than the one I thought I had. IT also has some with different bolts 16 or 20 I think. Then deep pan or shallow pan etc...

Can someone point me in the right direction.

Also, what kind of fluid should I use, and who makes the TC addetive I keep reading about that keep the shutter from happening. From my search a lot trucks have that issue, I'd like to make sure that does not happen to mine.

Do you recoment doing the filter/fluid change or should I just take it and get it flushed for $90?

I did the filter and fluid change on my 98...It has the tc drain plug..I used Amsoil snythetic ATF fluid in it also..No problems with shuddering on anything like that...90.00 is a good price, my fluid by itself was more than that but I wanted the Amsoil snthetic so I went that direction instead of the Mercon V....

Really happy so far... I hoped that helps alittle

The 5.4 has the E40D. Your 4.6 should have the 4R70W. A deep sump pan from Mag Hytec is recommended. It holds more fluid, has cooling fins, an o-ring, and a magnetic drain plug. If you chose to re-use your OEM pan, then you can also re-use the gasket.

* • Deep high-capacity sump for maximum cooling

Aftermarket pans are available from Ford Racing Performance Parts, TCI, ACT Automatics, B&M Racing, Bowler Performance Transmissions, Mag-Hytec, & PML Inc. A quick "google" search will turn up all your options. Then it is up to you to weigh the pros & cons of each product. Just like with leveling kits, don't just pick one because it is the cheapest. They are not all the same. They are made from different metals, have different fill capacities, some come with the proper filter, some have magnetic drain plugs, et cetera.

Does Ford have a 'deep pan' 4x4 type pan for the 4R70W? I know they do for the 4R100 that is in the Lightning.

This may be a cheaper option and still get you the extra capacity with the drain plug. You will need the 4X4 filter as well- it has a longer snout on it for pickup
