88 AOD makes bad noise when i coast

i have searched for hours on here to no avail i guess i am one of the few with this problem. but back to the point ..
When i am driving in any gear and let out of the throttle the truck starts to coast then i hear a LOUD clicking noise. Its the kind of noise a tranny makes when you are still moving and you throw it into park. Really bad noise. I have talked to alot of guys and every one has a different opinion or guess. I dont have a clue, what i do know is that after the holidays are over i am tearin it out and havin it beefed up as much as i can afford. any ideas on what the problem is?? i do tow with it, it has 180k on it never really abused. well not real bad. it has never slipped .>?>?

It nothing to worry about, it does that when it goes into costing and is not driving the engine, this helps the MPG.
There is an anti clunk spring that is supposed to stop it but it does not always work.

thanks for the reply and sorry if i am miss understanding you, but what do you mean nuthin to worry about? it is really loud and obnoxious noise it sounds like the trannys fixin to fall out or go boom in a big way, i did however drive it for a while after the noise because i had to get home and didnt notice any other issues with it unless i started to coast ie unlocking the tc. so is there a way i can alleviate this problem with out removing the trans ?? or can i just drive it with the foot on the brake and gas to keep it from coasting? and be ok? and how do i break an anti clunk spring??

Clicking can also be a sign of bad u-joints.

possibly clicking or clunking isnt a fair discription of the noise.the loudness and harshness of this noise is the equivalent of a starter bendix skipping on the flywheel of a running engine just maybe not quite that fast. but very loud and or harsh. sorry guys i should make a vid or sumthin if i had the truck here at the house i would.

possibly not a tranny problem??

could this be a cracked flywheel? and not a problem with the tranny? i have never had a flywheel crack on me so i have no idea what it would sound like. i dunno ?

My 83 F150 with a AOD has been doing this for about 10 years and although I do not like it I have just learned to live with it. That is why I said not to worry about it too much. I think the AOD does not unlock from the TC it just over runs while coasting and lets the engine to idle down. I think this is a way Ford used to get better gas mileage.

i drove it around again tonight, its been a while since i drove it and when i put it in reverse it made the noise and didnt start to pull so i slipped it into park and the noise was worse untill it spooled down like it was something in the tranny parts that are spinning. and after hearing it more tonight it is more of a clicking than anything.. like two gears hitting(or a card in a bike wheel but loud).

Is the truck a 4X4?

I had a similar sound when my transfer case destroyed itself.

I was driving home from Indiana, andhad just come off the turnpike.
Slowing down, it would make a noise like gears grinding. Acceleration was fine.
When I got it home I had no reverse.

Long story short....new transfercase.

huh........

huh. you might be on to sumthin..... when i started drivin the truck (bout 8 years ago) i had a funny noise so i started pokin around under the truck lookin at u joints and i checked the t-case and it was DRY!! so i filled her up and the noise went away but i always was concerned with the fact it had been dry and how long had it been dry. that was around 130k or so now it has 180k or so..... do you remember what broke in the tcase??? and how would i narrow that down?? i have not been convinced that the tranny went out because the sounds and the symptoms dont add up to the tranny bein bad.

Everything....
It was destroyed so bad they couldn't rebuild it.

I don't remember which T-case I have in that truck. It's a Borg-Warner, either a 1345 or 1356, I'm leaning more towards the 1356, but there is an oil pump inside there that is driven by the geartrain, and it is part of the case.
The shop guy told me that it looked like the pump failed, tore up the case, and the rest just followed from lack of lubrication.

It always made noise like bearing vibrations from the shifter handle when I got it. After the replacement it was much, much quieter.

It was pretty much a mess.
I got it to back up by putting it in 4lo maybe twice.

I had to push it out of the driveway to get it to the shop.

The guy said that I was lucky to even be able to drive it in.

after you suggested the tcase could be at fault i started doin some research and i have the borg warner 1356. and one of the only problems they have is .... guess what? yup, the pump fails and then they tear up the case and cooks the rest of the stuff from lack of lube and heat.. mine is still somewhat driveable so i am takin it to work tomorrow and puting it on a lift to make sure it is whats makin noise. i have found several locally for around 200 bucks used but i wonder if i should have a used one rebuilt before it goes back in, since it could have the same problem...did you get a used one or a reman??
