Transfer case motor

What does the transfer case motor on a 1997 f150 4x4 with electronic 4wd do. I know this might seem like a simple question but I cant find the answer.

hi:it moves a shift fork in t/c for2/4/4l ranges and also houses the sliprings that tell the module what range it's in.
