116K tranny shot!!!

98 f150 4.6. Took it in for some tuneup stuff, including a tranny service, mechanic showed me metal shavings up to 4 inches long! He's guessing the planetary gears and/or overdrive is shot! Saw it for my own eyes but didn't feel any problems, and it's been 31K since it was flushed, but this is the first time the pan was dropped. 2K for it to be rebuilt!

Were you standing right there when the pan was dropped? It wouldn't be the first time a dishonest guy has dropped crap in the pan to make a good transmission look like it was coming apart to hook a customer.

clean the pan out, fill the tranny back up and continue driving until it blows up.

I agree...I know this is a Ford forum, but my dad owns a '94 Jeep Grand Cherokee with roughly 1/4 of a million miles on it. It got a rebuilt tranny at around 150k miles, but I think that was around the time I turned 16 so I might've had something to do with it being replaced

If it were me, I'd flush it out and keep driving it until you notice something yourself...then get it fixed. I don't know about you, but I'm a -very- skeptical person and have to notice things for myself before I'll believe them.

Good Luck!
