converting from 2wd to 4wd
converting from 2wd to 4wd
Hey. I am about to switch my truck from an auto to a manual. I have everything i need but the tranny that I have is from a 2wd. does anybody know what all is required to change it to a 4x4? will the extension housing from the auto fit the manual? what is the difference in the output shafts. what will happen if I use the auto PCM while I am looking for the correct one? My truck is a 99 f150 4x4 4.6L.
Thanks for any help.
Thanks for any help.
im not 100% positive but im thinking your pretty close with a different tail housing and output shaft. shaft should be longer.
are u trying to use a same tranny swap? like 4r70w for the same except the one u have is 2wd?
not sure what the differences are between computers for a trans setup for 4wd and 2wd if there is any. i'll let others who know more for sure answer that. but you may be just swapping computers.

Phil
they talked about this exact thing on Extreme 4x4 last sunday. Ian said that you need a new shorter tail housing from a 4x4 tranny to mate up to the transfer case and that the shaft will be shorter. he had the tranny allready apart which like phil said i think will be needed(definatley dont take my word on it)
A 4x4 transmission has a shorter output shaft. A 4x4 frame is different. If you are going to use an IFS you need to hang the front differential and passenger side axle tube from the frame. There is no provision on the frame of a 4x2 for this. You will need a shorter rear driveshaft as the t-case stretches well past the point in space on the frame where the 4x2 transmission ends.
