did a search didnt find my proublem, trans slipping?

I have a 2001 w/ 4.6L auto, im not sure what tranny... but when i put it into gear (P to R, P to D, R to D, and D to R) it tkes 3-5 secs to engauge, im not to sure what the proublem is or how to fix it. I have 108,000 miles on it, and it has never been flushed to my knowlage. Im thinking i may need a new converter, or cluch. I was talking with Fasterf150 the other day and he sait i need to drill a hole in somthing, to help... i have lost the link he gave me with the dirations. but it seemed kinda shade tree... can anyone give me a hand in firuering out whats wrong.. thx...

my first check would be the fluid, not only the level but the color and the smell. is it darker then normal?, wipe it on a paper towel and look for clutch material. does it smell burnt at all?
