The clutch is pretty strong, but a 5.4 Lightning will grenade that tranny. It will bolt to it, but you will get a lot of practice changing trannys.

I believe it is the same manual trans in the 4.6L as the 4.2L. If that's the case then no way.

well the thing is is that I am gonna rebuild my tranny with heavy duty parts and see how that goes if not then I am gonna have to figure out a way to fit the zf5 tranny to my truck and find the right transfer case for it

Look for some posts from JMC.. If I recall correctly, he swapped his 4.6 for a 5.4 and kept the manual tranny.. If I also recall, he also swapped out the 8.8 rear end for a 9.75at some point too..

So, if I understand what you are saying here is that you are wanting to swap in a 5.4 Lightning engine and still use the manual tranny? I think there was a reason Ford only has an auto trans and a bigger rear end for even it's n/a 5.4's...

Not sure on how "HD" you can rebuild a M5OD tranny?? Sure, you can get a HD clutch, but I would think it's the "inside" parts of the M5 that are weak and not much that can be made "HD"?? Otherwise, people would be posting all over the place saying how they have an "HD" M5 bolted up to their 5.4!!

The ZF5 out of a SD should bolt up to any 5.4, but you'll have some clearance issues to work thru..

Sounds like a cool project if you can make it all work!

Mitch

JMC has gone through a few trannys too if I'm not mistaken.

The input shaft is the weak link in the M5OD.

i would also suggest just going with the zf trans right away your m5od might hold up but if you really ream it with 4x4 engaged it will probobly be the 1st thing to go boom
