Tranny Over-Heating!!!

Hey guys I have an 04 with the 4.6L. The tuck is 2WD on 37's and has 4.88 gears. This weekend I was driving to the river (175mi) not even towing anything and the trans temp was outrageous! It was peaking about 230-240 degrees. So I pulled over and let it cool down for about an hour. When I first pulled off the road I felt the trans cooler it was cold to the touch. For the remainder of the drive it was staying around 205-215. Then on the way home today I decided to pull my upper valence off thinking that the cooler was not getting enough air and it was still about 205-215 the whole way home. So I was wondering if any body has experienced this and if so what should I do? I know it needs to go to Ford for a rebuild cuz I know as soon as I go to jump on it the trans will probably blow up.

What was the ambient temp? Is it summer in the desert yet? How many miles do you have on that transmission? When was the last time it was serviced? Will your engine & drivetrain warranty be honored with the re-gear and larger tires? Do you have a tune or has your PCM been re-calibrated for the gears & tires? If you are thinking of re-building the transmission, also consider upgrading - check out:

Also consider a trans cooler with a fan. Troyer sells them and so does B&M Racing.

This kit includes:

1.) Highest efficiency Stacked Plate Remote Cooler, with no drop in fluid pressure.

2.) Inline Fluid Temperature Thermostat/Fan Controller.

3.) 400 CFM Electric Fan with fully enclosed and reverse-S shaped fan blades, already mounted onto the stacked plate cooler for you. This Fan will be controlled automatically by the inline thermostat once installed.

4.) Billet Aluminum Mounting Brackets already installed.

5.) Installation kit including 4 feet of Goodyear transmission fluid hose, -6AN fittings and 3/8" barb fittings, misc. additional mounting hardware, radiator fitting adapters for the type of vehicle specified during ordering (not always needed, but we include them so you have every option just in case!), hose clamps, screws, etc. etc.

Everything you need to do an installation is included. There is enough transmission fluid hose (4 ft.) to install this unit close to the engine, transmission fluid lines, radiator, etc. area, which is where we normally mount them in F-series vehicles, etc. You can mount this Remote Cooler anywhere of course, even all the way back at the rear of the vehicle if you like, all you'll need is longer length hose.

Or maybe:

StreetFighter® AOD-4R70W Transmissions
Triple Tested
Fully remanufactured using only updated 1988 - 1993 cores
All bushings replaced with quality OEM parts from Federal Mogul and Clevite
All seal rings replaced with OEM rings such as Sealed Power
All gaskets and seals replaced with OEM parts
All steels and friction elements replaced with new parts:
Low-Reverse Band Kevlar® Lined
Overdrive Band Kevlar® Lined
Forward Clutches Alto
Intermediate Clutches Alto
Direct Clutches Alto (commercial clutches allow 2 additional clutches in the drum)
Reverse Clutches Alto
High performance Overdrive Jumbo Servo assembly - 11% larger than OEM 'A' Overdrive servo
Failure prone, direct drive input shaft replaced with TCI® heat-treated Vasco 300 high performance input shaft
Non Lock-Up transmissions have a TCI® heat-treated Vaccu Melt 300 one piece input shaft
Intermediate and Low Reverse Roller clutches replaced with new Borg Warner units
Higher mainline pressure from special TCI® pressure regulator spring increases torque capacity
Trans-Scat® kit installed for firmer shifts. Trans-Scat® also eliminates 3rd gear pressure cutback which raises torque capacity in third and fourth gears
Available in the following configurations: Lock-Up, Non Lock-Up
Each transmission assembly is statically tested for individual hydraulic circuit integrity before valve body installation
Each transmission receives a 100% tested, remanufactured valve body
Each transmission is dyno tested to verify proper functions, pressures and cooler flow

It was probably between 95-100 on Friday and only like 85-90 yesterday when I left. The trans only has probably 3K miles on it... It is re calibrated for the gears and tires. I have the Edge on it and it was tuned just to level 1 and when it started overheating I pulled the tune and just ran stock tune and it was still overheating after a 1 hour cool down. Also would like to add that the trans has a small leak out of the tail shaft already. I just don't know what would cause it to overheat???

That means the fluid is not getting to the cooler. You need to take it back to whoever did the rebuild.

I just got the truck back today and they said everything was fine... They said the fluid did not smell burnt and they drove the truck and said they couldn't get the fluid temp over 220F. But I thought it was suppose to run around 180 or so??? So my next question is how accurate is the EDGE temp gauge?
