transmission is done for!

ok so yesterday i tried pulling out of my girlfriends driveway and my truck wouldnt go in reverse. then it eventually popped into gear. then it wouldnt go into drive and only reverse would work. also when im driving there is a grinding sound everynow and then and when im in drive it wont shift it sticks in 2nd gear i think. its time for a new transmission right? is there a better transmission for off-roading. its a 94 f150 5.0 xl

Auto or manual? Sorry, re-read and you mentioned drive. Did you check the fluid condition and level? There might just be a need for a rebuild for about half the price to replace the whole thing for. The typical rebuild kit replaces commonly worn items and beefs up and improves common weak points. Take it to a tranny shop, they'll hook m' up for ya.
