Universal Joint Broke

Howdy Fellas, well this had to happen on my 10 day leave :-/ better now then when I drive to cali in a month...I was driving my 01 4.6 on 35's w/ stock gearing around a corner when the Universal joint connecting the rear drive shaft broke, and dropped the drive shaft on the floor. Now my question is when It was getting jacked onto the flat-bed, the tranny was leaking fluid on the uphill slant, is this only because I took the drive-shaft out of the transmission? It was coming out of the female end of transmission where the male connector is normally placed, so I was thinking that this would normally not happen as long as the drive-shaft is connected? Is this true?! I surely hope so because the new DS, and UJ is totaling $490 and I doubt I can do the tranny without using credit :o Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Yes that is normal, the seal that you see around the output shaft can only seal with the drive shaft in place. It is like that so the slip-yoke can be constantly lubed and prevent wear and tear on the splines (or so I have been told by my tranny guy. Hope this helps.

As a recommendation go with a good aftermarket U-joint like MOOG.

Your tranny is just leakin out of the tailshaft where the slip yoke would be...Your missing driveshaft. Just be sure to check the fluid level after you get a new driveshaft/u-joint installed. And Thanks for serving our country.

First of all thank you for the support, its much appreciated! I am very happy to hear that there are no tranny problems. I whent with a stock joint for now...I have to drive up to lejune on monday so I didn't really have time to think this one through unfortunately. I will most definately look into a nice aftermarket one a little later on, since I paid for a new universal joint I might as well get some use out of it lol. I am waiting to do a few things after I do the 2k mile trip to 29 palms, like new tires etc. Then I will replace gearing and universal joints and a bunch of other stuff. Thanks again for the replies!

Ditto on 2002....Same thing happened to me when I changed out a u-joint in the ditch. Truck was inclined with the front wheels on the street. Oh well, live and learn.

And I wholeheartedly SECOND that THANKS, for serving our country. I have two sons serving and it means a whole bunch to me that your willingness to stand tall gives us here at home our freedom. Thanks.
