Changing tranny fluid...
I'm at 122k now, it's been on fully synthetic havoline since about 60k miles. I'm going to drop the pan, change the filter and refill with ATF. I'm going to switch to amsoil probably... I don't do ANY towing (I towed a boat 15 miles in 30k miles total) but I still hear amsoil is superior quality.
The plan is to just drain it as best can be done... then refill. If it's all synthetic and the same weight it should be fine. I'm going to go with whatever weight the owners manual calls for... is there anything better I should consider? Also, how much should I buy? I'll have to order amsoil as I can't just go to advance, autozone or wal-mart and buy it.
Also... I'd like to purchase the absolute best filter, which brand should I get?
Thanks.

ehhole. do a search man. i even wrote some tips about my trans fluid change. i also have a 97. 1)drain and drop the pan 2)drain the torque converter(drain plug) 3) change filter and fill back up.
as for fluid. it is all preference. amsoil, royal purple, red line. all great oils. any mercon V will work great over the old fluid...Check to make sure you use the right fluid (mercon vs. mercon v) yes it makes a diff

Amsoil will mix fine with the Havoline ATF already in your transmission. If you only drop the pan you'll need 5 quarts, if you have a torque converter drain plug and can pop that you'll need 12 quarts.
When it comes to the filter, these easiest thing to do is go to the dealer and buy a Motorcraft filter. They're good quality and will fit with no issues. At around $40 each they're not cheap. National chain auto parts stores sell filters for $20-$30.
