4R70W Transmission

I have a 1997 F150 4x4 with 150,000 miles on it. It was recently leaking tranny fluid from the inspection plate. I was told that the most likely issue would be the torque converter seal. I dropped the tranny replaced the seal and reinstalled but it still leaked.
I am now told it was probably the front pump seal. What is the cheapest and most reliable way to go? New Tranny? Rebuild? I can remove and install myself, so what would the cost be on just rebuilding the tranny? Please help, so I can be educated when I start to talk to the repair shops about this issue...

150K on it eh? How much longer you want the truck? I'd have a rebuild done if you want to keep it longer. It'd be worth it, when one thing starts to go, all other things will start to pop up as well.
I tried the lucus additive before I dropped the Tranny but it didn't work. This isn't a small leak, it's a pretty steady drip/stream.
150k is a lot of miles but I abosolutely love this truck, and it's paid for, and worthless with out the tranny.
So, How much can I expect to pay for a rebuild, if I do the removal and Install myself?

i'd honestly rebuild it if i had the time and money but mine seems to be strong for now. just waiting for the 5.4 s/c to eat it lol. well it cant hurt much to just replace all the seals could it? oh while your under there check your level in the transfer case, i hear its common for the 4r70w to leak into the transfercase and mine does.
i heard $1k for rebuild at one point and time here.
best bet would be to find one already rebuilt, then trade yours in for a core deposit. Call around to wrecking yards, you should be able to find one. Maybe you can find one in decent shape, used, with little miles.
LOL just dont listen to them when they try and tell u what lube to run, especially with a mitsubishi tranny for a ranger. f'n morons tried telling me to run 10-40... i have NEVER heard of that one til now. i've heard ATF works better than 80-90 or 75-90 for cold weather

What do you think?
I found a Tranny shop and need your opinion. 24 years experience, Co-owned an AAMCO until he opened his own shop which has been in business for 5 years. He says Front Pump Seal. He will inspect and reseal the tranny for $300. If Clutch looks good amoung other things this is all he will have to do. If it is bad and looks in need of a rebuild, $1600. This includes a new Torque Converter, shift Kit, and available upgrades to this tranny. I searched around for a swap out, already referbished tranny, In this area the cheapest I could find without the T/C was $1400.
What do you all think? And Thanks for the imput and advice.

that sounds pretty good my buddy had a tranny shop rebuild his on his camaro because a valve body shot threw clutchs had to replace everything and it cost him 2,000...its always funn having a chevy tranny in the bed of your ford
but that sounds like a pretty good deal. What kind of shift kit is he making the lines bigger? more pressure or will it be threw the computer? my buddy has a E40D with a shift kit and the Lines are bigger and even if its at like 1/4 to 1/2 throttle it shifts and throws you around!! but all and all that sounds pretty good

I'm not exactly sure what kind of Shift Kit it is. I have a Super Tuner in the truck already which modifies shift points. and he was aware of that. But that will definatly be a question I will ask him. Thats funny about the Chevy tranny in the bed of the Ford. I had the most fortunate experience a year ago when I pulled a buddy of mine out of a mud pit. Me in my Ford him in his Chevy. I got pictures and he has not lived it down. HA HA

Oh Yeah, The Rebuild comes with a 12m 12,000 mile Warrenty
The Reseal comes with a 90 day Warrenty

Has the truck shifted funny? When you change the filter is it full of particles? I would just pay the 300 regardless of what he says. He wants to rebuild your tranny-thats how he eats. Pay the 300 and drive it till it won't shift anymore. Could be two years, could be 10, who knows.
