Question tranny or transfercase

i have a 98 f150 4.6 auto with 4x4 floor shift.
my question is when i try and put the truck in 4low i have it in nutral foot on the brake and when i go to move the shifter it grinds like you miss a gear is this more the tranny or something up with the transfercase?? it has 130,000
miles on it and the prior owner towed a fith wheel with it and never used the 4wheel drive. Thanks for any input

If the transmission is not in neutral it is still turning the output shaft. If you try to shift with the output shaft turning the t-case will grind.

Try it this way. Come to a complete stop. Shift the transmission into neutral. Foot on the brake pull the lever. If nothing is moving it should not grind. If it grinds try it in Park.

try rolling it a few inches either way and take a look at the fluid as well. I imagine its pretty burnt by the sounds of it

fluid is new just serviced tranny and diff's and transfercase 4hi works sometimes but not low it grinds when you try and put it in 4 low we tired the rocking back and forth and its in nutral and park no luck was told it might be tranny needs the bands adjusted or the transfercase needs gone through

if it just grinds then shut the truck off in neutral and shift it to 4x4lo then start it back up. thats what i have to do to my 79 bronco mud truck.

When you shift into 4-lo it is best to pull the lever back quickly and fairly hard. When the transfer case is in neutral there is little resistance on the output shaft of the transmission so even when the transmission is in neutral the output shaft will spin a little.

I have about that much on mine. I beat the snot out of it on a regular basis.
If it runs use it.

Assuming the OP is dealing with an automatic, I'd have the trans checked out... It's possible that the trans is dragging a clutch internally, putting pressure on the output shaft of the transmission.

If it's a manual, the clutch should be depressed and I would leave it in gear so you know the trans output shaft has stopped. Otherwise the input shaft slinging the fluid around can cause the output to try and turn.

Make sense? Clear as mud, right?

Maybe the vacuum line has a small leak causing partial engagement and a grinding noise
