Question Engine running in "safe mode"

I have a 2004 F150 Lariat 4x4 supercab. The 4-wheel drive all of a sudden did not work as I was hauling a trailer with a ATV on it off the ice this afternoon and now there is a message saying engine is running in "safe mode". Is there a problem with the 4x4 drive and is it safe to try to get it back home? Anyone with some answers?

i think safe mode is some kind of mode that happens when the engine over heats
and trys to use as little power as possible. check your manual

Do you mean "engine failsafe mode"? Mine did that after I had the battery changed. Had to re-clean and tighten down terminals again. Also flushed and changed coolant. No more problem's.

Scan the computer for codes and I'll bet it'll tell you exactly what's going on.

There are several reasons for the warning to come on. An overtemp condition is only one of them.

You will, as already suggested, have to have it scanned to see what is going on.
