'04 transmission whining
I had the dealer replace the tx fliud in my '04 5.4L auto transmission as part of normal maintenance at 35k miles. Since the weather has turned colder, I'm noticed a whine from the transmission while in Drive at about 2K rpm. It disappears as the truck warms. Is this normal (I'm talking extreme cold, 0-10 degrees)? I'm not sure if this is related to the fluid change, or just a coincidence. Thoughts?

I have an 06 5.4L Auto trans and mine has started doing the same thing over the last four weeks or so. I have 30,300 miles on the truck and it has not had any trans service done (that I know of, I bought it with 14,500 miles on it).
It is just as you have described, it is when it is very cold and then goes away. On this morning's drive in to work on the highway it was about 10 degrees and the whirring/high pitched whining sound was more pronounced and I noticed for the first time that it stopped when the trans shifted up... that was the first time i realized that it is probably coming from the trans so I jumped on this site to see what i could find out...???

Trans noise
I have a 04 with a 4.6, 4x4, with 43,000 miles, and had a similar whine that started 4 weeks ago, its now at the ford dealer having the tranny taken apart to find the cause. The only diffeence mine had for symptoms was it was a spartic whine that would come and go that didn't depend on temp or gear, but more noticable at low rpm's. Glad they tossed in an extended warrentee. I'll post the cause when I get the truck back.

update on whinning noise
Update:
I had to take my truck to the Dealer for a different unrelated issue and I had them look into the whinning tranny issue. I had them change the tranny oil and filter. They said that they used a stethescope to try to find it but that they never heard it… plus the shop guy said that he thought that it was a ‘pulley’ and not the transmission, I believe that it is the transmission. They didn’t even drive the truck so of course they never heard it… I’m disapointed in their attempt to find the problem… anyway, so after the new oil/filter the whinning is just the same as before… it is doing it a little less now that the temperatures aren’t as cold but it still does it ramdomly. Most of the time it is at about 2,000 rpms right at 70mph, if I speed up or slow down slightly it goes away… it is pretty odd.
