Differential or Transfer case problem?

I read an earlier post where when turning right or left and accelerating from a stop the truck would slightly shudder. I just got back from the mechanic and they also said, as did the post, that it was the diff. Now my next question. Since I thought it was the xfer case I put it in 4 hi on dirt and got a nasty noise after and during turning that did not quit until I went back to 2 wheel drive. As I turned I could hear a "pop" or a bump every three or four inches in addition to the nasty noise. I thought it would be very much like having a detroit locker.

So, what do you guys think?

The popping/banging noise on hard packed dirt is the noise your drivetrain makes when it binds and then releases. If the surface was slippery it should allow the wheels to slip and not bind hence no noise. What kind of dirt was it? Hard or slippery?

I'm curious because I have a shudder as well. What was the recommendation of the dealer? Or is not a problem.
