what does any one think about adding a fan driven trans cooler in series with the factory one. i tow an 8000lb trailer in sunny hot florida (no hills) and i have concerns with heat damage. i purchased a 25000 gvw cooler with fan, the stock cooler is almost a large but i was dought full as to its ability. i was also wondering what temps are exceptable, i do have a digital pyrometer and can get quick accurate readings. i have a 02 screw 135,000 miles w/5.4L , tow package,oil cooler, trans cooler, firestone air bags in rear,k&n and all works well. is the add on cooler over kill?
last summer i made a trip to key west pulling my boat/trailer 6200lbs. ambient was 95 degrees and transline going into factory trans cooler was 230 exit was 215. like i mentioned i have 135000 on my truck with absolutely no issues and i would like to keep my rig that way. i could not find any guidlines as to max temps, or fluid break down threshold temp. i may go synthetic in the trans & diffs. i currently run mercon v.
as mentioned exit is 230 degrees. the cooler is only cooling 15 degrees.keep in mind the pavement is like 150 degrees so when you come to a stop its like parking on a frying pan. i'm thinking i want temps below 200. i did inquire at a couple of trans shops and they looked at me like i was asking for the atomic weight of mercury. there reply is change fluid more often or don't pull heavey. i do it at 30,000
I added one of these and it brought my temps down close to 50 degrees more then they were!

I have the same cooler as Phil linked above. Got mine somewhere else, but it's the same one. That cooler is AMAZING and here's a bunch of reasons why...
--Complete factory style bolt in job!! This cooler requires no modification or rigging up any type of mounting system. Slides right in front of the radiator, shoot in some sheet metal screws and you're done. Literally it took me 30 minutes to install the cooler, not including lines.
--Looks 100% stock factory install!!
--Temperature drops are as Phil described. This thing does the job!!
--Surface area of this cooler is more than double that of the stock 150 cooler on our trucks.
--Mounting location places it right in front of the grille for superior air flow going down the road.
--Mounting location means the regular cooling fan will draw a lot of air across this cooler when sitting in traffic...unlike the stock one as you well know!!
--With just one of my electric fans running, and pulling air through a double core radiator (I changed mine, you don't have one if it's stock), the A/C radiator, and through the new cooler, it would still hold a shop rag (not a paper towel) up flat against the cooler. What does this mean?? Absolutely no need for an additional cooling fan mounted on the cooler. Just something else to mess with.
--Stacked plate design means no pressure drop like with a tube/fin cooler.
--Running two coolers in series I have been taught creates too much of a pressure drop through the system and may have a negative impact on the operation of these highly electronic controlled transmissions.

It's a Ford cooler and there's only one model. Follow the link in my post for part number and where I got it.

This is a replacement for the stock, factory cooler. Yes, you want to completely remove that dinky cooler and replace it with this one. If you install this cooler, you will have to cut the lines and splice in new stuff, but that's not rocket science. Re-read the last bullet in my original post.
