I agree on the fluid changes. I too have neglected the transfer case fluid change. gonna see next week after 115k what the fluid looks like. also, i change my p/s fluid. another thing im gonna attempt myself is the brake fluid change. pulling out all brake fluid from the resevoir, filling up with fresh fluid, then bleeding from each wheel, untill clear fluid emerges.

Here it is at 225K

As you can see, it hasn't really been abused too much......

My truck just turned 63K miles (owned it since 46K miles) and Im about to take it to Aamco to get the tranny flushed and the filter changed. When should the transfer case and rearend fluid be changed? Is there any other fluid under the truck that needs to be changed? What about the fuel filter...do you recommend chaning it? Figured this would be a good post to ask these questions since everyone is reporting high milage trucks.

Im going to switch the engine oil over to Amsoil full synthetic in January and change it once a year. Since I bought a work truck, the F150 sees less than 8K miles a year. I just checked the coolant rating and Im good this year. Is the fluid Aamco uses on my transmission good stuff? I hate to ruin a good transmission. Sorry for all the questions, but this is the lowest milage truck I have owned and I would like to keep it for a long time.

At your mileage I would change every thing at this time. As far as the crankcase - I don't believe in any oil being in there that long. I stuck to the same procedure throughout the life of this motor and changed every 3000 miles..That's up to you , so far I have 230,000 miles and it doesn't leak or burn a drop in between changes..

That's a real clean looking truck...nice.

Anybody know where you can get a chart that has the change intervals on all fluids? I checked my manual and it doesn't have one.

There in that little manual in the glove box that comes with the truck. Or you can go to motorcraft.com and download it ..

For my fluid change intervals, I just go with:

Oil - Every 3K, Mobil 1, Motorcraft 820s Filter
Trans - Every 30K, Mobil 1
Coolant - Every 100K, Prestone
Front and Rear Differential - Every 100K, Mobil 1,85w-140 Rear, 75W-90 Front

Transfer Case Fluid, Brake Fuid, and Power Steering Fluid were not on that rotation. I feel pretty strongly that the transfer case should probably be changed when the Transmission is done after seeing the condition of the fluid after 230K. I'm still not sure on the PS fluid or brake fluid, but I will dive into those.

Other maintenance:

Clean and Oil K&N Air filter - Every 50K
Rotate Tires - Every 10K
Fuel Filter - Every 15K, Motorcraft
Spark Plugs -Every 100K, Motorcraft Platinums
Wash- Every week

I am a creature of habit, (some call it obsessive/compulsive), and I like to keep things to a schedule. Once something gets added to the schedule, it gets done come hell or high water......But the truck and my other cars speak for themselves.......

A Men Brother!!!! Me to on that last part.

As for p/s fluid and brake fluid...I completely change the brake fluid with every brake job. I changed my p/s fluid at 70k when I did every other fluid on the truck. Biff, that's a great looking truck and I loved that color. Reason I say loved, is becasue my first 150 was that color and it was great. I wish they still offered it.

I am right there with the OCD maintenance schedule. Motor oil every 3k (or less) tire rotation, tranny pan drain, and full check of everything else is done at this time (3k). Air filter is checked every 3k and is changed as needed. The truck see's plenty of different terrain making it a slightly different interval each time.
At (or around... like to be early vs. late) 15k I change fuel filter (and it will be time for step one)
At the 30K I flush the tranny, change the transfer case, change rear end fluid and do all the above. I will usually change front end dif fluid also, but it see's far less work then the rear and seldom needs it at this time... just habit I guess.
At 50K-60k its time for ALL fluids to be flushed out and replaced. Coolant, P/S, brake, and all the above. I will also inpect all lines and gaskets for any posible leaks. At this point the process starts over!
It seems like a lot and I know its overkill, but I have access to my shop and its pretty easy, at the end of the day to throw my truck up there and do something real quick. Put it this way, when I drain my fluids, they all look great and clear. I would much rather drain out oil that is still good, vs. oil that has gone bad and your engine (or whichever part) has been suffering from it. That would pretty much be my routine, although im sure I have forgot a number of things, you get the jist.

P.S. Biff, that truck looks GREAT! Drive that thing proud my friend! Great job, I just hope my truck is half that good looking when it clicks over the 200k mark.

I like the color as well, its called Pacific Green and there are six variations of it in the color scheme. My 2006 Trailblazer SS is Black. It looks great when cleaned up, but my F150 looks just as good parked next to it.

Mercedes, thanks for the compliment. I have to give props to Ford because this thing has been driven for 10 years in Michigan winters. We put a lot of salt on the roads, and it is difficult to keep a vehicle looking good this long here.

I'm pretty sure the Mobil 1 I bought was 85W-140, but I could be wrong. At the first 100K change, I bought the Motorcraft stuff at the dealership (75W-140) but it was $16 a bottle. I have the 9.75 inch rear-end, and the 85W-140 just starts out a bit heavier. It was quite a bit cheaper for the Mobil 1 stuff, and I use a lot of Mobil 1, so thats what I bought for the second 100K change.

"NO offense, but thats not exactly a well maintained vehicle."

None taken. And yes it is.

There are very few people who will see 300K+ miles on their vehicles. I've had 4 that have seen it. Working on 5, now.

I'm sure I'll put 500K+ on the Toyota before she leaves me.

If they weren't "well maintained", however that is defined by you, they'd never would have made it.

No brag, just fact.

I feel people throw way too many parts and fluids at their vehicles thinking that it's gonna make them last longer or run better when they don't really need to. But that's my opinion.

Just sharing my "real life" experiences. Take 'em as you feel.
