My 95 E4OD issue/s

Hi Guys.
I recently traded my 70 351C powered Cougar I owned for 18 years for a 95 Power Stroke 7.3 Xcab long box 4x4.
I haven't driven 1000km out of it yet and now have what I think is a worn out transmission.

I noticed a couple hard shifts when I first got it.
Yesterday I started it up and when I placed in gear I noticed it took a second or so longer to engage.
A mile up the road the trans seems to go into N at stop signs.I check fluid on level surface running and it appears to have enough fluid on the pellet type dipstick. No fluid is added.
Out on the hyway I notice the trans disengages from engine and drops the engine rpm from 2200 down to 600ish on deceleration.
Pressing on the go pedal re-engages the engine to trans but once I stop I have to shut the truck off and restart for the trans to go back into gear.

Now I have read that there are reprogramming potentials as well as valve body issues but I am completely new to both diesel and "modern" vehicles.
Till now a 77 F250 400 4 speed was the newest vehicle I have owned.

The online forums are a great source of information so I am asking the question/s here now while I continue to search for information regarding my issue/s.

Anyone who could short track this info for me would be appreciated.
I am a pretty good gas engine mechanic, can rebuild some older Ford auto trans C4 C6 and have a fair working knowledge of engines and automobile systems all pre 85.....Post 85 I am at a complete loss knowing nothing about Diesel, newer electronic fuel and now I read trans systems are computer controlled.

I have read that clearing codes might clear the trans issue might not.
Could someone explain to me how the codes are cleared or read?

Also what is the proper procedure for the OD OFF light on the shifter arm?
Am I too manually switch OD OFF each time I drive it from city to hyway and then switch on on hyway at say 60MPH and switch off again on off ramp?
It seems "odd" to me that the default for OD is "ON" and not set by default to OFF as we all start off slowly, few of us begin our daily drive pulling out of driveway onto hyway.

So I'm here for an education.
Please connect me to the info you think is relevant to my current issue.
Thanks!

Howdy and welcome to the new age of ford trucks!

The E4OD is a funny guy. Handles big power, is actually closely related mechanically to the C6, and helps out sometimes in figuring out whats wrong.

First step is to see what codes if any are stored. The PSD uses a OBD2 scan tool hookup so any autozone, western auto, napa ext usually pull the codes for free.

After that there are a few "inexpensive" parts you can change based on the codes and what the tranny is doing.

OD lockout is purdy simple. Dropping the shifter to (D) with the OD on will let the tranny operate in gears one though four. You don't have to lockout OD while daily driving at lower speeds because the truck won't shift into fourth until the truck is going fast enough.

OD lockout is pressed for a few instances though. Say you're flirting with 45-55mph in traffic or loaded down. Hunting between third and forth constantly would build a lot of heat and locking out fourth would solve the problem.

You can also get some extra downhill braking if you are rollin' fast down the highway and dont wanna waste brake in the mountains or such.
