m5od rubber plug repair

Hey, my m5od is leaking in the common spot, those rubber plugs. I'm going to change them out this weekend along with the gasket on the transmission cover.

My question is, this looks like a rubber gasket so I guess I'm not supposed to use sealant? Is this correct?

Thanks

Are you planning on removing the transmission to do the repairs? What year truck do you have?

Its an 88, I think I can do it from in the cab. From what I've read here http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/i...e_Measure.html and https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=205550

Good luck removing the cover without lowering the tranny. It will be a tight fit.
You might be able to break the cover free and remove the gasket but if it is a rubber one it sits in a groove in the cover. You will have to meticulously fit it in to the grove without being able to completely lift the cover off the tranny.

So, no sealant right? This may seem like a dumb question but I wanted to be sure.

On the rubber gasket for the transmission cover do not use any sealant. Are you sure that that gasket is actually leaking? Could it be a leak from the shift lever tower that is dripping down? Maybe the plugs are leaking?

I think its the plugs that are leaking, I figured if I'm going to be taking the top cover off the tranny I mind as well be prepared to change the gasket. With that in mind I purchased a new gasket just in case.

How much room do you have between the transmission and the tunnel? The shift forks sit about 3½ inches below the plugs that you want to change. So you need to measure the top of the shift tower to the plugs and then add 3½ inches. Is there enough room to pull the cover off with the tranny in place?

I'm not 100% sure yet. I will take a look at it this weekend, this getting dark at 5 is horrible. Based on what I've read in these forums in others I should'nt have a problem, I hope. I will probably measure it before I take the bolts out just to be sure.

UPDATE:

There was plenty of room to pull the tranny cover straight up and off the Tranny. I did shave a little bit of a problem getting the nut off the bolt that holds the shifter in place because of space but none-the-less I got it done.

That is good news. On the 97-04 heritage models you need to remove the tranny. I have a 3# lift and I can just manage if I remove the tranny cross member and pry down on the tranny.
