C6 Transmission swap

Hey guys, quick question. I have an 89 F150 standard cab 1/2ton with a 351w and a c6 automatic transmission. I'd like to direct swap the tranny with one that has overdrive and hopefully one that I dont have to add electronics to the truck or anything. So basically, is there a direct bolt-on replacement with overdrive where the only thing I may have to change would be driveshaft length. If so, which would be the best to go with and what else would need to be done to get it in. Thanks in advance! Oh, and would an AOD fit/work? I dont pull anything with it and the engine has 130k so I know its down a bit on the "new" hp/trq numbers. Just needs to stay automatic.

Check out a summit racing catalog sometime. There are a few products available that plug in to an electronically controlled automatic tranny and basically run it for you, so you don't need to convert to EFI or anything of the sort. You do have to install a few sensors, but I would imagine those come with the products themselves.

Read adrainspeeder's trans info thread at the top of this forum, and check http://www.baumannengineering.com/ . Yes, an AOD is the only trans that fits your description, but I'd still look for a beefy upgrade since even a worn 5.8L puts out more torque than the AOD was intended for.

Try a gear vendors OD unit. About 1500 and it bolts on the back of your c6.

Thanks for the responses.

From what I've been reading, I'm going to have to avoid the gear vendors unit. 5k mile fluid changes and $2600 new just isn't gonna cut it. Probably 75% of the responses about the unit on other webpages are negative in regards to problems the unit causes with the tranny over time. Just dont wanna take the chance.

As far as the AOD swap, I've been reading that the E4OD is basically an electronically controlled AOD with the problems "fixed" concerning what would be needed to be changed to put the AOD behind a 351 as far as internals go. I've read that the E4OD guts will swap directly into an AOD tranny, effectively correcting the problems the AOD would have had behind a 351. Does anyone here know this as the truth? Can it be done this way? Will the internals from an E40D swap into an AOD "beefing" it up to run behind a 351?

No - the E4OD is a C6 with overdrive and electronic controls. The AOD was based on the light duty FMX which is about the same strength as a C4.

No, ya got your trannys mixed up...

C6-E4OD-4R100

AOD-AODE/4R70w-4R75e

Beefed up AOD if you want an automatic, or ZF S5-42 if you want a heavy duty manual.
