What do you all think about a ZF 5 speed on a 300 I6, in an 1986 f150 superab 4x4 with the 4 speed? I think the 5 speed would do it good, but I could be wrong...looking for easier highway driving.

any thoughts?

 

well i have an 89 f150 4x4 and the zf is one of the biggest pieces of junk ford put in a truck, if you get a good one, it may last you 2-3 years, maybe assuming it being used. The tranny in mine is the mazda/toyo and its a good one, rare but good, so before you spend money on a zf check around on some feedback about them, i have always heard bad things about them

The ZF S5-42 or S5-47 is a rock solid heavy duty unit that came in the big Fseries trucks with the 300, 351, 460, and the big diesels. (some rare special ordered F-150s with the 300 too), and would do great in your 86. Your donor trans needs to be from a 4x4 truck.

The more commonly and cheaper to find Mazda M5OD-R2 from a Bronco or F-150 with the 300 or 302 would also be handy if you arn't towing big loads. I do, but it shortens their life.

Yea, I figured that...also, does anyone kow of the ratios on the 4 spd and the 5 spd? I looked around, but cant find anything...or, point me where I need to look? just probably not looking in the right place...thanks

Also, do you think the drive shaft will be the same? and if not, could I take the one off the doner truck?

The d'shaft should be close enough to work fine, but it might need to be lengthened. The ZF is a short trans.
