trans fault

first off i ahve an '04 f150 screw 5.4L.... i was driving home from work today when my truck threw a trans fault on my dash display. it drives fine, no burning smells. It has been slowly dripping tranny oil from the pan and could be low, would it throw this fault for low trans oil ? and is there a way to read codes without an obd2 scanner, like turning it on and off and counting the light blinks ??

It will need to be scanned using the proper scan tool.

That means a CAN-capable scanner with enhanced/manufacturers support.

hey the exact same thing happened to mine and then it started slipping a yr ago and i had the transmission changed by the dealer. And just yesterday it was doing the same thing and i dropped it off right after that. If they change the trans again on it that makes the 3rd tranny thats been in it.

funny you mention this. I also have a 2004 5.4. last weekend i was driving and my trans started slipping and eventually said "trans fault" and o/d was turned off. I took it to ford and they are replacing the transmission now! I wonder if this is a frequent occurence for the 2004s???

I am also having a Trans Fault message appear on my truck. My transmission also feels like it is slipping under heavy acceleration in between 1st and 2nd gear.I am wondering if there are any other people having problems like this. It really sucks cause I just purchased it within 5 months ago......F'n ford, shoulda stuck with chevy
