save the money you would have spent on new fluid and put it toward a new trans

if you get 200k out of a tranny and it hasnt been rebuilt, thats pretty good. ill be happy of i get 150k out of mine.if you plan on keepig it for awhile find a good rebuilder and see what they charge, or one out of the junkyard.

I think I'd take the $100 you would spend on a flush and apply it to a rebuild or replacement tranny. At 200k, almost all automatics are living on borrowed time no matter how well it's been maintained, and with your stinky fluid and noises all a flush might do is keep it alive a little longer.

Folks act like a Transmission is a magic black box. If you don't have any problems working on your engine then I would get the parts and schedule yourself a rebuild. It can be done on a weekend. Every one I've rebuilt has worked fine. I just did the one in my Taurus and the hardest part was getting the darn thing out. Most transmissions are rebuildable with a master kit and a quality rebuilt torque converter. Get the kit, converter, and a rebuild manual and you're all set. The only special tools I have for trans work are the ones I finally bought for this last one. I finally bought a cluch spring compressor and a actual trans jack. Man that sure speeds things up. I rebuilt my E40d at around 200,000 when it started acting funny. It was like yours making weird noises and then started slipping out of OD. If you take your time and read your manual a couple of times before you start you'll be fine. I'll probably get flamed for it but a Transmission is not that difficult to rebuild. Since you are working on a truck, its even easier. FWD cars are just not fun to do any maintenance on. I am selling the Taurus since working on it. Its a third car in a two car family anyway.

Besides, its very rewarding to pull it, fix it, and drive it another 200,000. Mine has an additional 130,000 on it without a single issue. The only thing I can recommend is install an additional cooler when your reinstall you fresh tranny. It will extend the life substantially.

edit: if you need sources for parts I'll post them

You can buy a new one on @bay for less than $1000.00 brand new never used 4R70 they have 4wd/2wd that would be better than a rebuild
No wear on the hard parts.
