tranny leak advice

hey guys, i have an '04 f150 5.4l with the 4R75E tranny. I am dripping tranny fluid,it seemed to be coming from the edge of the pan. i went under yesterday took the pan off checked the gasket (seemed to be fine), used a ball peen hammer to kind of flaten the surface of the pan just in case there was some warpage from the bolts, used the re-usable gasket bolted it back together added my tranny fluid, and after getting it back up to operating temp it was still dripping !! How good are the reusable gaskets ? should i have replaced it ? it wasnt dripping from anywhere above the pan from what i could tell and feel. Should i try a new gasket ? or maybe even replace the pan with one that has a draining plug ? or better yet get both ? thanks for your help guys

pan probably warped

sometimes when you drop the pan to change the fluid, it is left hanging from one end which can bend the flange somewhat. The gaskets are reusable, but if the pan is even slightly warped, you'll need to replace it.

in the future, if you don't already do this, be sure to drop the pan evenly to avoid potential warp.

replace the gasket first to see if that is it. $31 at local dealer. Use a container large enough to capture most of your fluid from the pan and simply reuse it. If you don't mind sinking money into a new pan, I'd do that.

good luck

yea the pan came off evenly i had my jack under it with very little pressure to help keep it in place. Would i get a new pan from the dealer or should my parts store be able to get one ? is there a part number for a pan with the drain plug ?

you can call any dealer's parts dept. and get part numbers (including drain plug if it came with it). you'll have to ask you local parts dealer whether or not they can get it. sometimes they get one from the dealer at jobber cost then sell it to you for slightly more than what some dealers sell it for, sometimes slightly less. depends on what kind of profit they want.

good luck
