starting out a load in 2nd???

starting out a load in 2nd???
This week the main farm truck was having engine cooling problems so my uncle had to use mine for pulling silage wagons out of the field. On the first load or 2 i beleive he started out the loads in second gear because of the way he explained things to me, saying it didnt have enough power to pull it out the driveway so the he backed up and started it in drive. I then informed him that D starts out in 1st- second starts in second.
anyways my question is- could any harm be done to my tranny starting out a load in second or does it just take alot more rpms?? When i tow loads i always shift it to first and then shift up to second once i get out of the field. another reason why i hate it when other people drive my truck- ya never know if you're ganna have a truck left when they get done with it.

Yes, harm can be done if you do it enough. Starting out in second causes the transmission to slip more, causing heat to build up. Second is best left to slippery surfaces like a boat ramp or a snowy road. Straight from the owner's manual:
Use 2 (Second) to start-up on
slippery roads or to provide

well it sounds like he only did it once and then just used Drive from then on- (hopefully) this was the first load he pulled with it so the oil shouldnt have been overly hot to start with on a 70 degree day. i have the tranny oil cooler and the 5.4 liter.
i checked the dipstick this mourning and it is still the same color as when new and doesn't have any strong smell yet or anything. I have been told that when it starts to stink or change color is when u need to get it changed or at every 30k whichever comes first.
i have started out in second with no load many times as it starts out pretty easy. I do this when i get tired of it shifting back and forth between 1st and 2nd when doin some putzing around town- and my wheels always spin a little in 1st from all the power when taking off. most of my driving is done in such short trips that i dont think my tranny oil even gets up to full operating temp most of the time.
