My overdrive broke!

Hi,

My overdrive on my 2002 F150 4.6L broke on the freeway. I was accelerating to catch up with the speed of the traffic and suddenly I felt loss of power. I looked at my tachometer and the RPMs were really high, that is when I new something broke. I stopped and started accelerating again and as soon as it shifted into overdrive, again the same symptom... no power. So, I had to turn overdrive off to be able to drive.

Anyone has an Idea what could be wrong?
All of the other gears work fine except for overdrive.

Sounds like your OD solenoid may not be engaging. Maybe it could just be an electrical connection problem. I'm sure others will chime in with reccomendations.

(OD also won't work when you re-assembled the solenoid incorrectly, and the band can't engage. DAMHIK.)

Thanks, I hope it is just the OD solenoid... at least I want to have an idea of what could be wrong before I go to a tranny specialist, I don't want to go there and blindly believe what they tell me and get ripped off ...

Mine did that, $2200 later I had a re-man transmission in my truck But my reverse went out at the same time so my whole transmission was shot.

I still hope it's just the OD band .... could this be the case ?
Anyway, thanks for your inputs, I'll be taking it to the mechanic over the weekend ...

Yes it could be just the OD I think. mine was just OD and 3rd.
But,, by the time they take it out of the truck/take it all apart/fix it/put it back together/put it back in the truck.
Don't be surprised if it's at least 1500. maybe more.
Good luck with it,,,,hope you get it all fixed up.

If it needs to be removed

you really should rebuild the whole thing. might cost a few hundred more but better safe than sorry. It sounds to me like it is job that would require removal..
