tranny questions on a '02 5spd
tranny questions on a '02 5spd
I recently bought my first truck. an '02 5spd and this thing is bone stock. rubber floor mats, crank windows, no cruise, etc. Now i love this thing but one thing i hate is that Ford decided that a manual transmission truck doesnt need a tachometer!
So first question, how much should this tranmission withstand? i normally shift every 10-15mph. and i know thats not hurting it but id still like to know how hard my engine is working. which leads to my second question.
Is there a place where i could buy a replacement gauge panel that would have a tachometer? i was thinking about a bolt on but i realized i dont know what the truck redline's at so a bolt on wouldnt help too much.

Does the 02 have the electronic digital odometer? If so, it can be placed into a diagnostic mode which will show you RPM's. I did this to mine and calculated the max shift speeds. With a 4.2 V6, 3.55 gears, and 16 inch tires, don't go faster than 30 in 1st, 55 in 2nd, and 80 in 3rd. 4th will hit the speed limiter before it's wound out. At these shift speeds, it's turning somewhere around 5000 to 5200 rpm. I think the V6 is good for 5600, but it will have a rev limiter.

Post # 3. Once it says "test" you may start the engine. You can use basic math to calculate speed vs. RPM in each gear.

After you press the odometer reset button you can immediately start the vehicle. When it reads tESt release it. Press it repeatedly till it shows tach then release.

Hmmm, wonder if it's like the '92-'96 trucks where you could just swap to a tach cluster and it work no problem.
Anyway, 4.6L? I take it up to the 5500 redline all the time with the M5OD-R2 five speed.
