1991 E4od

I have a 1991 Ford E350 XL with a 351W and a E4OD and a year and two months ago I had the E4OD overhauled by a trans shop after I broke down outside of Tucson AZ, I have it towed back to Southern New Mexico where I live and the shop near me did the job. I am a retired ford Tech who left Ford right before the E4OD came out and I have no info on the unit. I am over warranty and she has less than 2000 miles since the rebuild was done and now she shudders on initial take off and gets stuck in high gear ""Feels like 3rd gear "" and when it is stuck in high gear you cannot go into reverse it locks up. Since I know nothing about this unit I could use some schematics and advice and I was considering swapping a C-6 in it's place and wondered if anyone can enlighten me on what it will take to do that.

Thanks in advance

Tom AKA Retired Tech

You can find exploded diagrams of both near the bottom of the Diagrams album in my signature link (click the black Bronco). You can find a TSB about the E4OD on the 2nd page of this thread.

Swapping a C6 will be fairly straightforward if you get the crossmember from the donor van.

I'd call the trans shop that built it - 2 years is embarassing for an E4OD. All the bugs were worked out of that trans in '95, and any decent rebuilder should know all the tricks.

Hi Steve, Crossmember is different what about driveshaft and yoke ? Linkage I bet is most likely close enough to adapt. Let me ask you a question sing you are familiar with the E4OD I will tell you what she is doing and see if you can give me the answers ""She sticks in high gear and refuses to downshift and when you finally get her to down shift she shudders or as everyone calls it slightly slips in first gear take off and hot or cold behavior the same. I did talk to the rebuilder at the main shop the other day he dopes wish to see it but it may cost me money and the amount of time on this unit is a year and five months in two more days, Mileage is under two thousand I do not trust him and my wife has missgivings about his rebuilding skills and afraid we may get the old shaft. I do not know this unit I never worked on it but C 6 I loved in the dealership it was the best workhorse Ford had before all the new crap came out. I left Ford in 88 before the E4OD came along. Can you also post some pix of the assembly tear down and tell me what is what ? If it is easier you can reach me at yankees_out_west@comcast.net my name is Tom

I'm not a slushbox mechanic - if I have a problem with one, I either replace it or send it out. I think there's an article about rebuilding a C6 in the Tech Writeups forum on FSB.

The E4OD is much stronger than the C6, and when properly rebuilt, MUCH more reliable. If I was earning a living off it, I'd keep the E4OD.

I can't help you with that. Like I said: I'm no slushbox mechanic. What experience I have with them is all in 4WD/AWD vehicles, so I've never had to worry about fitting a d'shaft to a trans.
