99 F150- cannot shift from park.

I just changed the brake light switch and now I cannot move the automatic shift out of park The brake lights work now, but are not needed if I cannot move the truck.

Is there a signal in the brake light switch that would effect the gear shift?

Thanks

Yes, the park interlock will not let the shifter move from park without the brake being pressed. Sure you got the switch in right?

You can just turn your key to on before starting and shift to neutral, then start the truck 'till you figure out whats wrong.

Plastic Sleeve missing on new switch

I forgot to mention that there was a gray plastic washer between the brake actuator and the brake light switch which I did not re-install. Could that be the problem?

In the meantime, I am using an override that I found here to get by until I try installing the "washer". (trun key on without startingl, then shift to neutral, start the car and you can then shift to other gears).

Thanks
Gary

That washer could space it out enough to make contact.

Its called the "BOO" (brake on/off) switch and is located on the upper part of your brake pedal. When I had my 97 F150 the connection wires broke and caused it to not want to shift from park.I replaced the broken connection and the problem was fixed.
