Question Automatic Transmission Shifter Question

I'm working on an floor shifter conversion with the automatic transmission on a 2006 F-150. I bought a miss advertised shifter that is actually for the new Explorers and it has an additional gear, 1 2 3 D instead of just 1 2 D. Does anyone know about lever workings on these transmissions? I'm not familiar with the internals of the transmission. I know it connects with a cable to move the lever on the transmission in increments. Does the increments of the shifter have to be exact? Would it be a waste of time to attempt to use the Explorer shifter under these conditions? I would appreciate any comments or knowledge on this topic. Thanks
