Hi first time here hope you can help. I have a 1996 f-150 4X4 with a 351 engine. The transmission started to hesitate when going into reverse than failed to go into reverse. I was plowing snow in very large lot so I kept going without using reverse and 1/2 hour later it went into reverse and lasted 4 more hours then quit again. brought the truck home still no reverse but next evening when I came home from work with my other truck I tried it again and reverse was back and I plowed my drive way with it with no problem but it still hesitates when going into reverse and I don't trust it enough to take it on other plowing jobs. So what do you think? A used transmission is $500 and to have it rebuilt is $1800

 

You're not going to try ANY diagnosis??? Just replace a part? Have you even checked the fluid level, color, or smell?
