Unhappy Pause when shifting into Reverse

I have a 5R55E tranny and when I shift it into reverse it takes about 3secs to engage. This really scares me because sometimes I forget and step on the gas after I put it in reverse and the engine revs and slams into gear. Also this has only happened to me 2 times but after I reverse and put it in to drive it fills like the tranny slips for a sec or two then catches, peals out and goes fine.

It shifts nice and feels intact.

The tranny has 32,000miles on it and the fluid looks original and clean and full.

There is a TBS on this but I can't see what they say about it. Just the title. here it is-
SUBJECT REGARDING DELAYED REVERSE ENGAGEMENT. *JG

Also, is there bands in my tranny. If so, when do I replace them and is there a way to adjust them? Thanks!

Auto transmissions have bands, yes. Have you checked the fluid level? a 3 second pause is not a good sign, mine did that before losing OD. Luckily it was only OD that I lost and was able to limp it home and then to a dealer for a new trans.

Mine has done that since I got my truck.... Fords just seem to have a lag going into R for whatever reason....

Well over 100,000 miles on my E4OD that I've owned it and that's just what it does going into R.... I change my trans fluid once a year, and I've not had any other issues with it... I tow the TT in my sig about 3000 miles a year too...

Well I am going to flush the fluid and change the filter this weekend and hope that it helps. Well since yall said there are bands in there, when do you change them? How you adjust them if needed?
What tranny oil do you think would be best for a mercon 5 tranny? I wanted to use Royal Purple but the internet does not say if it is good for mercon 5? So I guess I will be using Mobile 1. Or should I use a Motorcraft? I want a syn. in it.

Ford never put a 5R55E into a 97 F150. It would help if you identified the subject of your post since it's not what is listed in your profile.

The TSB number you listed is not in the format of Ford's numbering system and is not a valid number.

There are no TSBs in my library that were issued on that date.....

Where did you get this data???

Steve

There is no site for the rangers so I was hoping yall would help.

And the other TBS was from the 2001 Mazda B3000 TBSs. They have the 5R55W tranny too. They have the same engine.. and well just about everything is the same except the badge.

Hey Bmwlover540i

I may be able to help with your Ranger trans problems.

Your trans is a 5R44E, not the 5R55E, that was used behind the 4.0L rangers/explorers. The two trans look the same and have almost the same internals but different torque ratings. Also your last post lists the 5R55W, I assume that was a typo because that trans is not used in your Ranger.

There is a tsb for delayed reverse engagment and the fix is a pcm calibration update. If that does not work I have seen some of the 5R trans blow out the valve body seperator plate gasket in the reverse servo area causing the delay. 3 seconds is too much of a delay for that trans in my opinion.

The other tsb about the thump/clunk on accell refers to lubing the slip yoke of the rear drive shaft. That usually fixes the problem, if not you may have to replace the rear driveshaft or get the slip yoke replaced which can cost just as much depending on where its done.

Hope this info helps you some

My '06 F-150 does this since day 1. It's got 20k on it right now. I just put it in reverse and wait for it to kick in. Sometimes it gets annoying when I want to back up quick if people are waiting on me.

Thats weird, my trans code is D. My filter book says that code D is the 5R55E. Maybe a typo but oh well.
Well I changed the filter and fluid this weekend. All the fluid not just half and the trucks goes into reverse like normal now. It takes about 1.5secs.
As for the TBS-
Where would I get this pcm calibration update and what does it cost? I am not under warrenty.
Second, where is the slip yoke? I feel like a idiot for asking this.:o
As I was under the truck I saw some fluid coming out of where the driveshaft goes into the tranny. I was worried that it was ATF but I wiped it with a clean cloth and it was like a golden brown. Is this the slip yoke? If so, how would I grease it? Thanks for all your help!!!

Indeed, for yours it's TSB # 01-13-8. Any Ford dealership should be able to perform the work, and it shouldn't take more than an hour topps.

And yes, it's the 5R44E behind the 3.0L.

Looks like your question has been answered (doesn't surprise me given the great crew here), but you might want to check out TheRangerStation.com for the future. TONS of info on RBV's.
