Transmission Fluid

i am about to change my tranny fluid. i was just about to pick up fluid, filter and gasket and i was asking the guy (who worked for ford) which fluid to go with. he told me it didn't really matter you are mainly paying for the name. is there any truth to this? if not what should i go with? i'm not really looking to pay for amsoil or anything up in that price range. also, should i use mercon v or mercon? according the the hayden's manual it says mercon for a 97 but i've also read diff from the sticky for the 4r70w transmission.

The 4R70w got Mercon V '98 on from the factory, and also a TSB addressed '94-'97 4R70w's get that fluid as well upon a change.

Motorcraft fluid is fine for me. But pay as much more as you want to get a warm fuzzy feeling.
