I have never done Auto to manual. Off the top of my head you will need pedals, flywheel, clutch kit, slave, master, fluid lines, reservoir, upper and lower shift lever, both shifter boots and possible driveshaft modification. You will need to have the PCM reprogrammed to eliminate the tranny controls. The clutch switch is bypassed with the automatics so that will have to be rewired or your truck will be able to start without depressing the clutch. The same switch also controls the cruise deactivation. The tranny in the picture is from a 97-98 truck. When you cut the hole in the floor be sure to use the 97-98 location. In 99 the shifter was moved back 55mm and this picture has the shifter in the 97-98 position.

thanks alot jm
the truck im talking about is used mostly offroad for working on our ranch & for hunting etc.
it seems like it would make the truck alot better if it was manual

ill have to look into it, just asking everyones opinions but is it worth it?
oh & would my elec 4x4 work with the manual tranny, ive always seen manual with manual.

I converted my '92 F-150 4X4 5.0 from an E4OD to a ZF S547. The best way to do it is find a donor vehicle identical to yours (motor and wheelbase). Ford uses a variety of different bellhousing bolt patterns and you need a tranny that will bolt up to your motor. I did the swap the hard way and pieced everything together. One important thing to remember is that the manual transmission and the automatic transmission may be different lengths and this will affect the length of your front and rear driveshafts. The ZF was 2-9/16" shorter than the E4OD so I had to find a shorter front ds and a longer rear ds. You probably want to swap computers (from auto to manual) and swap the transmission wiring harness. I recently sent a guy a spare manual trans computer because he said after he did the swap he had idle problems. he says the truck runs better now. The E4OD crossmember had no drop to it and had to be replaced with a manual crossmember. On the 92 there is a jumper that is pulled to get rid of the automatic's neutral safety switch function. The electric transfer case shift function will work with a manual trans.

Yup, best bet is a donor truck. You'd need a M5OD-R2 from a 4.6 F-150 or a ZF-5 or 6 from a 99+ Superduty with the 5.4L, 6.8L, or 6.0L. Not the 7.3L.

The computer will still operate the engine no problems other than setting a check engine light for all the tranny codes. From the factory, only the automatics were available with the ESOF, and you would need to keep the auto computer to make it work, as a manual computer would not be set up for it.

This is an easier swap on the pre 97s as all the cabs/frames/ext are set up for any combanation tranny, but with a little fab work you can make it happen.

Smile wiring harness/saftey switch

so im in the process of doing this swap in a 1992 f150, from the E4od to a M5R2, and the problem i am running into is how can i get rid of the neutral safety switch/wiring harness that goes to the transmission?
What wires do i need to cut or do what to make it work?

Honestly for offroading and working an automatics what you want, but however if its really what you want you could do it.

AFAIK, manual trannies are still the best for everything, unless the driver has a missing left leg.
