4low extremely hard?

I have a 99 f150 4.6 ext cab I picked up not too long ago and it works great however getting the truck into 4low is a complete pain inthe butt. I actually pulled the shift **** off trying to get it into 4low. any thoughts on this is it common and is there a easy fix. I m not too worried about it as I rarely use 4low. Just figured I better ask in case it is a sign of a larger problem. h high works great and 4 low works well when I finally get it in also. Thanks in advance.

It might be a good idea to take the shifter on the transfer case partly apart and regrease it. A litle wd-40 helps for a while but if you clean it up and regrease it it won't give you any trouble for a few years.

The motion of moving to the left than back could be bound up from rust. Get under and check it all out.

With the manual t-case, the trick is two-fold: 1) Keep it lubed. 2) Don't come to a complete stop. Shift to neutral, but let the truck creep ever-so-slightly. That forces the gears to move a bit and lets them mesh easier. If you're going too fast, you'll know it. [a loud crunch is a bad sound, a little clunk or crunch is normal]
