I notice on some of my customers Expeditions that they'll oftern have 2WD, A4WD, 4WD, and 4WD LOW. Is that system also on F150's? Can mine be upgraded to include A4WD? Would be nice on snowy days!

 

not sure my 97 f150 has 2wd/4hi/4lo on the dash.snowy days all ureally need is 4hi. 4 lo is for pulling trees out of the ground.

 

he means A4wd as in Automatic. if you're wheels slip then the truck will automatically switch to 4wd. im sure it can be done in these trucks. someone may have even done it.

 

It could probably be done, but it would not be an easy swap. The Control Trac system is controlled by the GEM, and the F-150 was never equipped with that system. You'd need to replace the transfer case with one from an Expy/Navigator, replace the GEM with one (and do some creative programming as it'll also be looking for some stuff that the F-150 doesn't have), add the Torque-On-Demand relay, replace the 4wd switch, and possibly have to do some creative re-wiring to get the speed sensors to patch the signal to the GEM. Is it possible? Sure. Would it be an easy thing to do? Not at all!

Thanx GI Joe, I was wondering if it had been done OE since I'm not patient enough or creative enough to do something like this for the fun of it. Maybe after the house is perfect and the kids are off to college, but not with my current life.

 

That T-case was on the 97-8 Expeditions. I believe in 99 they went to A4WD-4X4Hi and 4X4Lo. You will need the T-case, Extra wire harness and the GEM from the Expedition. The Tcase in A4WD mode is controlled by the GEM. There are two hall effect sensors in this t-case that the trucks don't have. There is a solid state controller for the Clutch in the T-case. I could be done but only if you are ready to get into rewiring and all.....

Give me a manual transfer case and I'm happy.
