Trans.- not on the sticky?
I was just about to replace my transmission fluid. My door says "E" under transmission and my build date was 03/98.
So this means I have the E40D right?
I just wanted to make sure I refill it with Mercon III automatic transmission fluid and not a different type. This is what Chiltons says to use.

I'm curios what does the tag say on your trans - they put a tag on them just behind your digital transmission range sensor , right above the pan flange - First set of numbers is the part no. prefix, mine F8UP-MB
Second set is the trans model Nunber, mine is PRB-V3
Just was curios what your read..
Here's some 98 4x4 trans illustrations , can't locate the 100 yet

I just found one used 4R100 4WD - Looks Identical to mine , but it's from a powerstoke. Is it compatible ?

Okay, now I'm looking in my owner's guide and it doesn't even list the 4R100 as an option on transmissions. It only mentions the E40D and the 4R70W, so I must have the E40D.
Strangely though, the owners guide says to use Mercon ATF and the Chiltons says to use Mercon III. Is there a difference?

Re: Fluid
Per this summer's TSB, Mercon V is now used in all applications that previously were specc'ed as Mercon-only.
There is no such designation as "Mercon III". Mercon is usually dual-specc'ed as "Mercon/Dextron III". Dex III is a GM specification, not a Ford spec.

Well, I'm going to take a chance and bid on that one on ebay, I posted the link a few posts ago, It looks the same even though the doner is a 03 powerstoke..I need a trans bad.

E4OD was a case of the fingers not listening to the brain....
The 4R100 that bolts to a 7.3L will not bolt to any other engine. It's a unique bolt pattern, so if you buy this trans PLEASE tell us about how you bolted it up! That should be VERY interesting!

I'm not kidding - look at the pics of mine then look at the powerstrokes - Listen, I'm not at all worried about it bolting up at this point , my only question will the computer except it. Nobody seam to be able to make out exactly what trans I have - this is the only match I found. I have a schematic of the E40D & 4R70W - I don't understand why I cannot find one of the 4R100 in Fords Library - strange as hell!!! No stamping on tranny , but mine is tagged with the trans model number - The number reveals NO identification. All evidence collected thus far points to the 4R100 model , why in the hell doesn't it just say that..PITA. As stated the left side in comparison matches with the I'm purchasing, I don't know what else to do. The trans shop doesn't even know!! I call all the TSB numbers - they are not in service or I get a persons residence. What am I missing? In what direction would you go?
E4OD and 4R100 are the same transmission. There were some internal upgrades from E4OD to 4R100, and the 4R100 has a couple more electrical hookups on the outside.
I'm sure you're not kidding. You must know more about these transmissions than I do, so buy the diesel trans and tell us how it fits. The computer won't be able to tell the difference. As far as it can tell one 4R100 is like any other.
If this were MY truck, I'd rebuild the trans that's in it. If you don't want to do that, buy a 4R100 that will fit a 5.4L engine. The bolt patterns are different between a 5.4L and a 7.3L.
