Changing trans fluid

hey, i am going to change my trans fluid and i was just wondering if anyone knows how much fluid the torque converter holds and does that get drained when you drop the pan. my buddy told me that his torque converter gets drained when he drops the pan but i have heard from some people that it doesnt.

It does not get drained when you drop the pan. depending upon the year of vehicle, you may have a drain plug in the torque converter. The 4r70w up thru 2001 had a drain. After that , no. As to the amount left if you drop the pan. You get about 1/3 when you do it. The rest is still left in the trannie and TC.

so there is a drain plug for the TC. Then how do you get the rest of the fluid out?

On the bottom of the bell housing, there is a rubber plug about 2" in diameter. Pop the plug out and you'll see the torque converter. Crank the engine over by hand until you see a small pipe plug in the bottom of the converter. Pull the plug (7/16" socket) and let the conveter drain. If you drain the pan and converter, it should take 12 quarts to fill it back up.

Time saver

When you pop the rubber plug off, if you don't see the drain plug use a wrench on the pulley to turn the engine over. Sound like an obvious thing to do, but when I did this a few weeks ago I didn't think of that and spent a few hours trying to get the drain plug into view.

I use a remote start button on the starter to crank it over. Takes me about 10 seconds to find the drain plug.
