Transmission Compatability

Does anyone know whether it's possible to replace my '98 F150 automatic transmission with one from a 2002 FORD EXPLORER XLT that has a torque converter?

What engine is in your F150? What engine is in the Explorer?

If it is the 4.6L with the 4R70w (trans code U on door jam sticker) it would need to be a 4.6L explorer. I don't remember exactly but I think the '02 V8 explorers still use the 5.0L which is a different bolt pattern then the mod motors, but the same as the V6 in the F150 if you have that. Also I believe the V6 explorers got the light light duty tranny that wouldn't last to long in the F150.

The explorer in 02 got the 5r55e transmission. It's a POS IMO. THe only explorer to truck configurations I see possible are taking a 98ish explorer 5.0 trans and putting it into a 4.2 truck.

Transmission compatability

Thanks for the feedback guys. Unfortunatly I'm such a novice when it comes to auto mechanics that I only "kinda" understand half of what you are suggesting as to trying to decipher whether the transmissions would be compatible. Here's what the guys add said:

2002 FORD EXPLORER XLT 4X2(55,000 miles)
- 4.0L V6 Engine(including ECM, intake, cylinder heads, etc) - $700 obo
- Automatic Transmission w/ Torque Converter - $300 obo
- Independent Rear End(differential gears and casing only) - $200 obo
- Roof Mounted Luggage/Cargo Rack - $40 obo
- Rack and Pinion Steering w/ Pawer Steering Pump - $100 obo
- Tail Lamp Assemblies - $25 each
- Head Lamp Assemblies - $30 each
- Front Corner Turn Signal LAmps - $20 each
- Rear Tow Bar(mounts to frame) - $75 obo

2003 FORD EXPLORER SPORT TRAC 4X2(23,000 miles)
- 4.0L V6 Engine(including intake, injectors, cylinder heads, etc.) - $800 obo
- Automatic Transmission w/ Torque Converter - $400 obo
- 4:10 Limited Slip Differential/Rear End w/ Disc Brakes - $400 obo

I guess I could have left out all the other parts he's selling...sorry.

And my truck has the 4.6L with the 4R70w....does this help any?

The 4.0 liter trans will not work at all. That is a 4r55e or possibly a 5r55e.

Yup, no go on those. You need a trans from a 4.6L or 5.4L to have the right pattern to bolt to the engine.
