Unhappy c6 problems

hi guys,Im a new guy with a problem.I have an 88 bronco that has a 302 with a c6.The issue is that sometimes when i shift into reverse it shifts harder at times than others and then sometimes you get this real loud grinding sound and you have to put it back into another gear to get it to stop it even seems to come out of reverse while backing at times and then makes the gringing sound. Also when your driving it shift just fine, but when you go over a hill on the decline or comming to a stop it seems like its going out of gear and makes the same gear grinding sound, its very loud, you give it gas and it goes back into gear and the grinding stops. This is driving me insane ,since it shifts fine going thru the gears i think it maybe something more simple than replacing or rebuilding the tranny.Any suggestions????????
Thanks and sorry for the long story
Danny

If it is 4wd it sounds more like a transfer case issue. If it's 2wd I don't know. Check the fluid levels in everything.

Howdy and welcome!

dirty, all FSB's are 4x4, fyi.

blue, are your sure you have a C6? PRND21 on the display right? The reason I ask is most 88+ 302s were the AOD.

If you do have the C6, it is a very simple and tough tranny and shouldn't cost more than 700-800bucks to have rebuilt.

Do you have a manual transfer case? Does it shift ok?

Adrian,
yup its a c6,and it is a manual transfer case.the transfer case shifts fine with no sticking or not wanting o go into gear.I have quotes on getting it rebuilt and its rather cheap $400 if I pull the tranny.I just want to make sure it needs a full rebuild and not just something simple. The fluid is clean ,full and no burnt smell detected.I love this truck an just want to get it back 100%.
Thanks for the welcome I wasnt sure if I was intruding on the site since I have a Bronco and not a f150.

It's a BW1356.

What did you troubleshoot?

Broncos welcome here. Besides you and I both know they are better than F150s anyway heh heh

Well actually troubleshooting may have been the right word,I got the truck to make the gringing sound it reverse, you could feel it in the transfer case shifter.I would pull it down into high and it would stop.still would not be in gear but it did stop the noise.I put it i 4 lo several times and put it in reverse several times with no problems.I put it back in 2 wheel and did the same deal ****ing into reverse several times.Just about everyother time it would do the grinding deal. What a pain in the rear!!!!!!!!!!
BTW thanks for the info on the transfer case.

Okay, just got back from driving the truck, heres what I found. When it starts making the grinding sound I can push forward on the t case handel and it stops grinding and drives like normal. Also if I do the same thing in reverse its okay as well.Is there any adjustments for the handel so it could go forward some and let the tcase be more fully engaged in 2wd.I feel like Im getting closer to the problem.

Check the fluid level. Heck, just drain it and put in two quarts of fresh Mercon. I have a bad feeling it's going to be not good on whats in there now.

Well I talked to a shop two days ago and the told me that the 1356 has a problem with the shifter shaft wearing on the casing allowing the shaft to shift side ays just enough to no fully engage into 2wd.They told me to shim the linkage with some flat washers to stiffen it up aginst the case. After 2 days since I have done this I have not had any problems with it popping out of gear. They told me that they run into this quite often and it will work just fine for years.I like the fact they told me about this instead of telling me the t-case was toast and that I need to spend big$$$$$$$$$$ to get it rebuilt.I guess now I will run it and see how long it last.
